Director, ExCITe Center at Drexel University
In this premiere podcast episode, we speak with Dr. Youngmoo Kim, Director of the Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center at Drexel University. The ExCITe Center is a transdisciplinary research program that promotes a collaborative and inclusive approach to technological innovation.
Dr. Kim and his team at the ExCITe Center are guided by the principle that a diversity of perspectives provides a potent source of creative ingenuity. The program connects a network of designers, artists, technologists, researchers and educators, to exchange ideas and experiment together.
A major component of the ExCITE Center's work is an effort change tech culture by changing the way tech is taught — encouraging a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math coupled with the creative fields of Arts and Design) approach at all levels, ensuring equitable access to makerspaces in K-12 education, and promoting a “productive rebel” model of leadership.
Projects that have emerged from the ExCITe Center's research include: skyscraper scale videogames, new musical instruments, robot performances, studies on makerspace culture and a variety of STEAM education initiatives. The center has also produced the Transcend MS program, Entrepreneurial Game Studio, and the Shima Seiki Haute Tech Lab at Drexel University.
Through educational workshops, inclusion groups, community business collaboratives and STEAM education camps, the ExCITe Center is reaching beyond the lab to build community around technology and generate an inclusive culture of innovation in Philadelphia.
