Business Specialist, Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Parnterships
The Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships at Drexel University is a community-based resource center, which positions itself as the front porch connecting Drexel to its neighbors.
The Center fosters interaction between the Drexel community and residents of Mantua and Powelton Village to enhance dialogue, strengthen collaboration, and provide residents access to health services, as well as art, cultural, and educational resources.
Kevin Williams is a business specialist at the Dornsife Center. His work focuses on professional development and empowering entrepreneurial leadership. He helps manage the KEYSPOT computer lab, and created the B Smart Workshop.
The KEYSPOT space is a public access computer lab — one in a network of many across the city — where people can come to strengthen their technology skills, create a resume, check email, or use social media. The KEYSPOT program at the Dornsife Center also includes a music recording and production facility — where we tape this podcast.
The B Smart Workshop provides free training to entrepreneurs, existing business owners, and new social enterprises. Participants in the workshop learn about business planning, financial management, digital marketing, and pricing strategies. They also get the chance to pitch their idea for a start up loan provided by the West Philadelphia Financial Services Institution.
In this week’s episode, Kevin Williams provides a more detailed overview of the resources available at the Dornsife Center and the B Smart Workshop. He also lends his thoughts on what more Philadelphia can do to build a more inclusive and equitable innovation economy.
